Midhurst & Petworth Market Towns
Magnificent countryside and breathtaking scenery serves as a rural backdrop to the pretty market towns of Midhurst and Petworth. Midhurst sits on the doorstep of the South Downs and is ideal for enjoying year round country pursuits from walking or cycling to riding or angling, including the world famous polo at nearby Cowdray Estate. Within the town itself the fine 17th and 18th century buildings served as the setting for past resident HG Wells's many books, including his best-known novel ‘The invisible Man’.
Petworth or rather ‘Peteorde’ as it was named in the Domesday Book is a picturesque town full of character and brimming with old world charm. Wander through the cobbled lanes, admire the Georgian architecture and stop to browse in the myriad antique shops which make this ancient market town a favourite with visitors.
Standing on the edge of the town is the National Trust mansion of Petworth House, with its extensive Deer Park designed by Capability Brown
